Miles And Samuel Walters (1774-1849 / 1811-1882)
Return to Collection  :: Return to Three-masted Vessels

Miles and Samuel Walters were a father and son who contributed immensely to the popularity of ship portraiture in the 19th century. Miles was a shipwright and seaman who moved ashore and began painting ships early in the century. His son Samuel would go on to dominate the Liverpool scene as one of the most respected of England’s pier-head painters. Walters’ portraits of ships that visited the maritime Mecca of Liverpool included numerous images of American vessels, increasing the popularity of maritime art on both sides of the Atlantic.
