|Henry Melling painted a wide range of subjects, many of them with marine themes, but was not specifically considered a maritime artist. He was however an avid yachtsman and was a founder of the Royal Mersey Yacht Club in 1844> he remained a member until his death in 1879. Born in Lancashire, Melling was the Grandson of a shipwright and boat builder. In 1829 he began art studies in London and was painting and exhibiting in Liverpool by 1841. He painted in oils, watercolor and pastels and was accomplished in etching and lithography.
