Duncan McFarlane (1818-1865 c.)
Return to Collection  :: Return to Three-masted Vessels

Duncan McFarlane was another of the Liverpool artists who shows a strong connection to America. A large portion of McFarlane’s portraits are of American ships, many depicted in their home waters. Nearly all of McFarlane’s surviving works are in American collections. For this reason there is ample evidence to suggest that he at some point may have immigrated to America, most likely to the Boston area. His paintings show exceptional quality and many of his unsigned examples have often been initially attributed to Samuel Walters or Joseph Heard.
