Issac Sailmaker (attributed) (1633-1721)
Return to Collection  :: Return to Three-masted Vessels

Originally from Scheveningen, Holland, Isaac Sailmaker’s name likely refers to his original profession. However, he immigrated to London at an early age to study with Dutch painter George Geldorp. He became one of the early British maritime specialists when he was employed by Oliver Cromwell to paint naval scenes. His paintings are considered significant for their documentary qualities and he is noted for his portrayals of East India Company ships, naval vessels and fleet actions. One of his best known works is a 1708 topographical view of the second Eddystone Lighthouse.
