|Charles Keith Miller wa sborn in Dundee, Scotland in 1836. He went ot sea as an apprentice at the age of fifteen and achieved his first command at 25. At the age of thirty six, after a career at sea, he began to pursue a landbased ocupation as a marine painter. With a small output of paintings, he supplemented his income by returning to sea sporadically until retiring for good in 1888. He produced his largest body of work, including ship portraits and a wide range of tradional marine subjects, between his retirement from the sea in 1888 and 1904.
