Vilhelm Melbye (1824-1882)
Return to Collection  :: Return to Artist List

Vilhelm Melbye was the most accomplished of three brothers who were all marine painters. Born in Elsinore, Denmark, he worked for many years in England, France and Germany painting marine views notable for their international appeal. His romantic style not only conveyed popular views of tranquil harbors, but was considered at its best when he portrayed drama at sea such as storms or shipwrecks. In 1880 Melbye was appointed head of the Copenhagen Academy of Art, a post he held until his death in 1882.
