| The southern California plein air painter Edgar Payne traveled widely to capture natural beauty on his canvases. Born in Missouri, Payne painted everything from signs to portraits to murals, but it was his mastery of landscape painting that would earn him the greatest praise. In Europe, he favored locations along the Brittany Coast and the picturesque ports of Concarneau and Douarnenez where he captured the local fishing boats in numerous paintings. These, along with his paintings of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains are some of his most recognizable compositions. |
