John And James Bard (1815-1897 fl.)
Return to Collection  :: Return to Steam Ships

The twin brothers John and James Bard painted their first ship portrait together at the age of 12. The brothers came of age just as steamboats began replacing sailing ships as the preferred means of transportation. Together they proceeded to record a detailed pictorial inventory of nearly every significant steamboat to operate on the Hudson River and in New York Harbor during their lifetimes. The Bard brother’s paintings evoke nostalgia for an era on America’s waterways that saw their greatest period of expansion and technological development.
