Namcheong (1845-75 fl.)
Return to Collection  :: Return to Three-masted Vessels

Nam Cheong is one of the few identified artists of the China Trade. He is believed to have had a studio in Whampoa as many of his known works feature the Whampoa area as background He painted both ships and port scenes using a repeated choice of colors. His paintings are identified stylistically through recognizable compositional devices and his use of light. He favored pink tones and smoothly rendered water with a soft play of light in the foreground. Although a few are signed or bear a stamp on the reverse, most examples by Nam Cheong are identified by their style.
