Antonio De Simone (1851-1907 fl.)
Return to Collection  :: Return to Artist List

Neapolitan port painter Antonio De Simone along with his father, Tomaso De Simone (1805-1888), are the best known of the Italian port painters. Usually painting portraits in pairs, De Simone would first portray a vessel in a tranquil panoramic view in the Bay of Naples with a smoldering Mount Vesuvius as a backdrop. His habit was to then paint the same vessel in companion piece showing it in a dramatic storm scene on the open ocean. This was a popular device that provided his patrons with a view of the vessel in both extremes.
